The Columbus McKinnon Group’s (CMCO) two German subsidiaries present their products together. In a new brochure, the two companies are now showcasing their joint range of hoisting equipment that is approved for use in areas with potentially explosive atmospheres.

Volkswagen to Buy Stake in Karmann
At its meeting today, the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft approved the acquisition of land, machinery and equipment formerly belonging to the Karmann holding company at the Osnabrueck site. For the coming weeks the establishment of a new Volkswagen car manufacturing subsidiary is planned and later on, the launch of a new vehicle project. Read more

Lanxess AG has developed a polymer additive for plastics and rubber that is now available for industrial application. These microgels, which consist of nanoscale organic particles, can be used to improve the material properties of elastomer and thermoplastic materials. Read more

Evonik Increases Prices for Coating Polyesters
Evonik Industries’ Coatings & Additives Business Unit will increase the prices for coating polyesters sold under the brand names DYNAPOL L, DYNAPOL LH as well as for the VESTICOAT UB product range in Europe, Africa and the Middle East effective July 1st, 2009. The price increase will be up to € 0.1/kg. Evonik says that this step is unavoidable due to some recent price hikes of important raw materials.
BASF Increases Prices for Methylamines
With immediate effect, BASF is increasing the sales prices for methylamines and key methylamine derivatives globally by EUR50 per metric ton or USD70 per metric ton. Read more

The Finnish Group UPM will renew its paper business supply chain. In Northern Europe, the plan is to establish a regional supply chain centre in Tampere, Finland. In Central Europe, UPM is planning two regional supply chain centres in Germany: one in Augsburg and one in Dörpen. Read more

Continental and Schaeffler: Purchasing Cooperation
Through a global purchasing agreement, the automotive supplier Continental and the Schaeffler Group have started the first large joint project in the history of cooperation between the two companies. The purchasing cooperation was contractually agreed as of March 27, 2009. Its goal is to optimize cost of materials and achieve a savings potential of 350 to 400 million euros for the period between 2009 and 2011. The number of suppliers of production materials is to be cut from 5,600 to 2,800. Read more

Contaminated Stainless Steel Imports
Over the past few months radioactively contaminated steel products have turned up in Germany. Since August 2008 more than 150 tons of contaminated material have been detected by German authorities. In some cases, importers or manufacturers had to take back their products. The metals industry does not really know the scope of the problem. Read more
Procurement for New Daimler Supplier Model
Daimler AG awarded prizes to 14 companies for their outstanding achievements at the first Key Supplier Meeting, which was held on March 12, 2009 at the Mercedes-Benz Center in Stuttgart. For the first time ever, the awards included a prize for innovation. In addition, the new “Daimler Supplier Network” cooperation model was also presented to the supplier companies during the meeting. The new model is aimed at establishing an even closer partnership with selected suppliers.
