DHL Freight, a specialist for European overland transport and part of the Deutsche Post DHL Group, has significantly expanded its service for temperature-sensitive goods: Coldchain transport services now cover more than 30 European countries.

Just recently, a further new relation – from Malta to the central hub in Mulhouse, France – was officially launched in Valetta, the capital of Malta.

Run in cooperation with the Maltese company Express Trailers, the new relation enables DHL Freight to connect another important manufacturing base of the pharmaceutical industry to the Coldchain network. Previously, Turkey and Russia with the destinations Istanbul and Moscow were successfully connected to the network.

“This enables us to offer even more flexibility to the continuously growing number of customers who have a demand for temperature-controlled services,” emphasizes Thomas George, CEO DHL Freight.

DHL Coldchain is designed for the scheduled, European-wide transport of up to 20 pallets of less-than-truck-load shipments. Around 500 special vehicles are available for service delivery. The temperature of the goods is measured continuously and transferred immediately by means of state-of-the art IT during the complete transport. For the first time, customers in Malta, Russia or Turkey now have the opportunity to cost-efficiently dispatch temperature-sensitive products via overland transport.

Complementing the temperature-controlling measures along the route of transport, the hubs of the Coldchain network have the equipment in place to ensure a complete temperature control along the entire chain of transport. This year two new temperature-regulated hubs were already launched in London and Milan, with more hubs planned to follow in Eastern Europe and Scandinavia by 2010.

The complete network is steered centrally from Basle where DHL Freight runs a multi-lingual competency centre for Life Science customers. The centre provides high-quality services ranging from comprehensive consulting to the development of individual concepts for special customer needs.

To ensure that the best-suited delivery solution is provided for each type of shipment, DHL Freight also works closely together with DHL Global Forwarding, Deutsche Post DHL’s specialist for airfreight and ocean freight transports. With the Airfreight Plus Europe service, DHL Global Forwarding offers an intra-European over-night-transport solution for time-critical Life Science transports. Combining their strengths, DHL Freight and DHL Global Forwarding meet Life Science customers’ needs with a nearly complete range of services in Europe.
